The National Fascist Party

Picture
The National Fascist Party was lead by Benito Mussolini. Fascism is extreme nationalism, totalitarianism system of government, a one-party state, economic self-sufficiency, and military strength and violence. Benito Mussolini founded the Fascist party in 1919 and won 35 seats in the 1921 elections. During the same time there seemed to be a threat with a left-wing seizure of power he made a "March on Rome" and his rule ended in July 1943.

In 1925, Mussolini, a fascist, rose to power.  He stopped news papers and other forms off press, rigged elections, and got rid of all his rivals.  Technically, Italy was still a parliamentary monarchy, but underneath that facade it was a dictatorship supported by control and terror.  It was a fascist state.  A key tool used by Mussolini, or Il Duce as he liked to be called, was propaganda.  He also used Secret Police to eliminate any people acting against him.

Mussolini had a different economic policy than the socialists before him.  He took the economy under the states control, but he preserved capitalism.  This way, the fascist party controlled the agricultural, industrial, and trading aspects of the economy.  This system seemed to boost production rate and really help businesses, but on the flip side the workers lost wages and were forbidden to strike.

As well as a different economic policy, Mussolini also enforced new social policies.  People were taught how to not think as individuals, but to think as a state and what their choices had on the state.  This created a very unified country.  The men were also trained to become very ruthless, fearless, and brutal soldiers.  As far as women were concerned, they were only to be mothers and wives.  Mussolini said, "Machines and women are the two major causes of unemployment."  He also honored women who gave birth to more than 14 children.  He personally gave them a special medal.  Women were also the first ones to have to make sacrifices in the name of Italy. They were asked my Mussolini to give the state their gold wedding rings in exchange for iron ones.  These new ones were to symbolize a stronger country.

At this time period, there were many changes occurring throughout the government and the state.  One of these changes was to occur among Italy's youth.  Fascist beliefs were that the children needed to be toughened up.  They were taught how to obey military style orders and disciplines.  They learned an in depth history about ancient Rome.  These youth were the most patriotic Italians of all.   They were often found in torchlight parades chanting "Mussolini is always right!"  Italy's youth were becoming more and more patriotic and by the 1930's the youth have become young soldiers ready to defend Mussolini and the great nation he ran.
